Electronic waste, or e-waste, refers to electronic devices that are no longer wanted, no longer functional, or outdated, and have effectively reached the end of their usable life.
As per E-waste Rule 2016, e-waste is defined as ‘electrical and electronic equipment, in whole or in part, discarded as waste by the consumer or bulk user, including rejects from manufacturing, refurbishment, and repair activities.
E-waste holds several valuable and reusable materials like copper, aluminium, silver, gold, plastics, and other metals. To preserve natural resources and reduce energy usage, old electronics should be properly recycled, refurbished, or reused rather than dumped in landfills.
E-waste also includes harmful and dangerous substances such as lead, mercury, cadmium, beryllium, chromium, and flame retardant chemicals, all of which can potentially contaminate the environment by leaching into soil, polluting groundwater, and affecting ecosystems and human health.
Many materials can be recovered from old electronics and used to create new products, reducing the need for mining raw materials. Metals from circuit boards, as well as plastics and glass from monitors and TVs, can be effectively recycled.
